Kanda Konya-cho
Living in the indigo town. Sukumo.
Konya-cho — literally "the dyers' district" — is where indigo dyers (kōya) once lined the streets. Since the Edo period, this whole quarter has lived alongside indigo.
"Sukumo" (蒅) is the fermenting indigo leaf — the raw material of Japanese aizome dyeing. It names the in-between moment when a pale, soft green is quietly deepening into indigo. The name of this place and the name of this house are tied by the same thread: ai, indigo.
