Resident Assistants (RAs) play an important role in creating a welcoming and vibrant community at U Share. But what inspired them to take on this position?
We spoke with three of our current RAs — Miku, Maie, and Sarah — to learn more about their motivations, experiences, and hopes for the community.
Miku: Continuing the Spirit of International Exchange
What inspired you to become an RA?
“At first, I wasn’t thinking about becoming a Resident Assistant. However, after living at U Share, I realized that I wanted to contribute more to the community.”
For Miku, U Share reminded her of a memorable experience she had while living in an international house in rural France.
“We shared our cultures, ate together, and learned from one another. It was one of the most meaningful experiences in my life.”
After returning to Japan, she wanted to continue living in an international environment where she could meet people from different backgrounds and gain new perspectives. U Share offered exactly that.
“As an RA, I hope to create opportunities for residents to connect, enjoy activities together, and build a welcoming environment where everyone can learn from each other.”
Maie: Giving Back to a Community That Felt Like Home
Why did you decide to apply for the RA position?
As an exchange student from the United States, Maie arrived in Japan hoping to experience cultural exchange and build meaningful relationships.
“Moving to another country without knowing anyone can be intimidating, but U Share immediately made me feel supported and welcomed.”
Through the community, she quickly formed friendships with residents from around the world and gained valuable cross-cultural experiences. At the same time, living in Japan allowed her to reconnect with her Japanese heritage and better understand her own cultural background.
“Because I understand both the excitement and challenges of living abroad, I wanted to help create the same welcoming environment for other residents.”
Maie also sees the role as an opportunity to develop professional skills related to her interest in marketing and community engagement.
“I hope to help create experiences that bring people together while also supporting U Share’s growth and outreach.”
Sarah: Building Community Through Leadership
What attracted you to the RA role?
For Sarah, the answer was clear: community building.
“Becoming an RA combines many of the things I value most — leadership, cultural exchange, and helping people feel connected.”
Before coming to Japan, Sarah served as President of her university’s Japan Society in Australia, organizing events that brought students together through a shared interest in Japanese culture. Since arriving at U Share, she has continued that passion as the leader of the Japan Club.
“I believe a residence can be more than simply a place to live. It can be a community where people feel welcomed, supported, and encouraged to participate.”
Having studied abroad herself, Sarah understands how challenging it can be to adapt to a new environment.
“As an RA, I want to help residents feel comfortable making connections, seeking support, and becoming involved in community activities.”
She also views the role as a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in communication, event planning, and community management while pursuing her long-term goal of working in Japan.
A Shared Vision
Although Miku, Maie, and Sarah come from different countries and backgrounds, they share a common goal: creating a community where residents feel welcomed, connected, and inspired by one another.
