A Coffee Break Near Waseda University

As a Waseda University student, there are always plenty of options to get your fix of caffeine, but Akha Ama coffee has certainly stood out as one of my favorites. This family owned and operated coffee roaster offers single-origin beans from Thailand and delicious food, all within a peaceful atmosphere just minutes from Waseda and Toyama campus.

First, let’s talk about coffee. I usually order a hand drip or a flat white and both are consistently smooth, flavorful, and well-balanced. The taste definitely beats other coffee shops in the area. The beans are all grown in the family’s local farm in Thailand. There, they emphasize their commitment to sustainable coffee cultivation using forest farming methods and completely pesticide-free practices. With this, they grow and harvest beans by hand at 1300m and you can truly taste the care which goes into the cultivation.

The thing I appreciated most was learning about this cafe’s story. It is truly a family operated business with the parents running operations, a son is a Barista and a daughter is as well back in Thailand. After running three stores in Thailand, they came to Japan in 2019 and have since opened stores. Then back in Thailand where the roaster was founded, Akha Ama works directly with coffee-growing communities in northern Thailand, supporting sustainable farming and fair relationships with producers. Knowing that the coffee comes from a business that values both quality and social responsibility makes the experience even more meaningful.

With the cafe only a short walk from Waseda it is convenient whether I have an hour between lectures or want to spend an afternoon studying. The minimalist interior feels calm without being too quiet, and the smell of freshly roasted coffee immediately makes the space feel relaxing. They also have second floor seating so there is always room to find a seat. The customers within the store are usually a mix of locals, other students, and the occasional dog on the patio.

Finally, if you do not know what you want to get, do not worry, the staff are always friendly, approachable, and speak English well. Even if you don’t know much about specialty coffee, they’re happy to recommend a drink or explain the different beans without making it feel overwhelming.

If you’re studying at Waseda and need a place to unwind, prepare for an exam, or simply enjoy a great cup of coffee, Akha Ama Coffee is well worth the visit.
