U Share holds a diverse range of events that bring residents together, creating opportunities not only to meet one another but also to form meaningful connections that extend beyond surface-level introductions. These events vary from potluck gatherings to U Share Talks to sake and fish pairing nights. They all provide an amazing opportunity to have a bite to eat and a drink with new friends while sharing why you are here and your goals for the future. However, they are not all about your future aspirations; they also create the perfect environment for laughs, socialising, and making wonderful memories.
When moving to U Share, I was aware of these events, but I didn’t truly understand what they consisted of or whether they were mandatory. At the end of the day, when you rent somewhere, you want your freedom. You don’t want to feel obligated to do things you don’t desire, as it is your home for however long you stay there, after all. However, I was pleased to learn that these events hold no pressure to attend; nonetheless, once you get here, you will want to.
My favourite event to this day was the U Share Grand Welcome and Sunset BBQ. The day began with three friends I had already made at U Share and me heading to Shibuya to attend the Grand Welcome. When we arrived, we walked into a vibrant room filled with people from our building mingling with one another. It wasn’t until this moment that I realised how many amazing people from all around the world lived in the same building as me.
As the Grand Welcome began, we participated in activities that allowed us to share our Japan bucket lists while also learning where each other came from and what our interests were. More importantly, it gave us the chance to connect with people we instantly knew we would build genuine friendships with beyond this experience.
The Sunset BBQ was held back at U Share on the WC2 rooftop. There was a DJ, great weather, drinks, skewers, and a beautiful sunset. It created a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere where you felt comfortable approaching people you hadn’t spoken to before, while also becoming close with those you had already met. Following the event, everyone had gelled so well that the evening continued beyond U Share itself, not as residents, but as friends.
Overall, U Share events provide a space to meet others, reflect on your goals in Tokyo, and create fantastic memories with people who quickly become friends. I am incredibly grateful to have been involved, and I will always remember the joy and connections created through U Share events.
